The story unfolds in a remote Carpathian village. Local sculptor Sashko is grieving the death of his wife. Volunteer Anatoliy, a musician by vocation, returns wounded from the ATO zone. Though not a craftsman, he gladly helps Sashko in his workshop. One day, news sweeps through the village: an unconscious woman has been found in the forest. This is Imeh, a blind refugee from Iran. She had intended to reach Europe, but instead found herself in a Ukrainian village. Both Sashko and Anatoliy fall in love with the young woman, who, more than anyone, is in need of care and support.
The drama Autumn Memories was filmed by an international team of filmmakers. For filming, they chose a village near Truskavets.
“We chose Truskavets because it is always good to be the first — to capture the best locations. I managed to convince my Iranian co-producer, Amir Seyed Zadeh, that filming in Ukraine is not only cost-effective right now due to the exchange rate, but also highly promising. Ukraine has quite a few film festivals, but very few of its own feature films, and even fewer that reach the international market. From the very beginning, this project was designed as international. And then, quite unexpectedly, world events began to mirror our script. I mean the refugee crisis from the Middle East. My first thought was: how do so many people already know what our film is about?! In this way, the story turned out to be relevant not only for Ukraine, but for the entire world,” says producer Viktor Vilhelm.
The theme of war is close to many participants in the film. Actor Dmytro Linartovych, who had been cast in a lead role, was drafted into the ATO. Yet the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine agreed to release him for a month so that he could take part in the shooting.
